Is Couples Counseling RIGHT FOR US ?

Let’s face it. Most of the time, we already know WHAT the issues are. But do we understand WHY they keep happening?

In couples counseling, I often hear the same concerns expressed in different ways:

  • “It feels like we’re roommates.”

  • “They don’t understand my feelings or really hear what I’m saying.”

  • “We don’t know if we’re going to make it. Is it possible to get out of this rut?”

  • “They always take their parents’ side!”

  • “Sometimes it feels like we’re raising our kids from two different planets.”

These concerns are often about more than a single argument or disagreement. Beneath the surface, there may be patterns around communication, emotional connection, trust, family expectations, parenting, boundaries, or the ways each person learned to relate in their family of origin.

Couples counseling can help you slow those patterns down, understand what is happening beneath the conflict, and learn new ways of communicating, responding, and reconnecting.

What’s Really Underneath the Conflict?

Couples often come to therapy focused on the argument — money, sex, parenting, in-laws, communication, household responsibilities, or trust.

But underneath the argument, there are often deeper patterns involving attachment, family history, emotional needs, cultural expectations, and the ways each partner learned to handle conflict.

Couples counseling can help you SLOW DOWN those patterns, understand what’s really happening between you, and begin responding to each other differently.

Instead of simply asking, “How do we stop fighting?” we can begin exploring, “What keeps happening between us and how can we change the pattern?”

For immigrant and first-generation couples, there can be additional layers around acculturation, identity, language, generational differences, and expectations from family members who may see relationships through a very different cultural lens.

And sometimes, the conflict isn't really about the in-laws, parenting, or who gets to make the decision.

It may be about what each partner believes family is supposed to mean.

Couples counseling can create space to slow these patterns down, understand where they come from, and find ways to honor your backgrounds while creating a relationship that works for the two of you.

When Culture and Family Become Part of the Pattern

So many couples seek help for the issues we mentioned above — communication, trust, parenting, sex, money, in-laws, or feeling disconnected.

What they may not realize is that there can be other, more subtle layers underneath the conflict.

Relationships can be challenging enough on their own. But when two people come from different cultural or ethnic backgrounds, there may be even more to navigate.

You may love each other deeply and still find yourselves carrying very different ideas about what a relationship should look like.

Perhaps you were raised with different expectations around:

  • Family and family-of-origin roles

  • Gender roles and responsibilities

  • Parenting and discipline

  • Marriage and commitment

  • Communication and emotional expression

  • Religion or spirituality

  • Traditions, customs, and celebrations

  • Boundaries with parents and extended family

  • What it means to be a “good” son, daughter, partner, spouse, or parent

Couples of All Identities & Backgrounds Are Welcome

Relationships come in many forms, and every partnership brings its own story, values, culture, and experiences into the relationship.

I welcome same-sex and LGBTQ+ couples, as well as couples from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, religious, and family backgrounds.

Whether you come from similar backgrounds or very different ones, your identities and experiences are part of your relationship story. Couples counseling can provide a space to explore those differences with curiosity, respect, and understanding — while building a relationship that feels authentic to both of you.

Common Themes Couples Come to Work On

Every relationship is different. Some couples come in with one specific concern, while others feel like several things have become tangled together.

Together, we can slow things down, understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and work toward meaningful change.
